Pen: The Story of Poet and Abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier”
As a descendant of JGW’s grandmother, Sarah Greenleaf, Leslie Greenleaf Santamaria has
written a picture book biography to introduce young children to the poet and abolitionist. With
an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University, Santamaria is a specialist in children’s
literature. In this lecture, she will discuss her research process, as well as the unique
considerations for writing picture book biographies and getting children excited about important
